The 33rd meeting of the European Society of Thoracic Surgeons (ESTS 2025) concluded successfully in Budapest, Hungary, from May 25 to 27. As one of the most influential academic events in the field of thoracic surgery worldwide, this year’s conference brought together top thoracic surgeons, scholars, and clinicians from across the globe. Key topics included lung cancer, esophageal diseases, minimally invasive surgery, and postoperative management—fostering innovation and multidisciplinary collaboration.

Conference Overview

The European Society of Thoracic Surgeons (ESTS), established in 1993, originated from the European Thoracic Surgery Club founded in the 1970s. It is a leading professional association with over 1,200 thoracic surgeons from more than 70 countries worldwide. Its mission is to enhance clinical and surgical care, education, training, and certification in thoracic surgery both in Europe and worldwide.

This prestigious global conference attracted thousands of professionals in general thoracic surgery. The agenda covered essential topics such as lung cancer, esophageal disorders, mediastinal tumors, tracheal surgery, minimally invasive techniques (VATS, RATS), and management of postoperative complications—offering a comprehensive view of both research and clinical practice.

Renowned thoracic surgeons from around the world were invited to deliver keynote lectures, sharing their clinical insights, surgical techniques, updated treatment guidelines, and perspectives on future directions in the discipline. These sessions helped attendees broaden their international outlook and gain a deeper understanding of global developments.

The conference also featured a dedicated Young Investigators Forum, providing a platform for emerging doctors and researchers to share findings, exchange ideas, and receive mentorship to support their professional growth in thoracic surgery.

The renowned "Master Cup" case competition stood out for its complex clinical scenarios, requiring young physicians to demonstrate advanced diagnostic reasoning, improvisational decision-making, and multidisciplinary collaboration. Elite teams from Europe, the Americas, and Asia competed head-to-head.

After more than four hours of intense competition, the Asia team—led by Dr. Chang Chen, Director of Shanghai Pulmonary Hospital—clinched the championship title, marking a remarkable comeback for the Asia team in the history of the Master Cup after years of anticipation.

Budapest, the capital of Hungary, lies along the Danube River. Originally two separate cities on opposite banks—Buda and Pest—it was unified in 1873 along with Óbuda to form today’s metropolis. Now the country’s political, economic, and transportation hub, Budapest is the seventh-largest city in the European Union and a key gateway in Eastern Europe. It is often called the "Paris of Eastern Europe" or the "Pearl of the Danube" for its architectural beauty and rich history.
