On February 24, colorectal specialists from Romania, South Africa, Uzbekistan, Malaysia, and Taiwan, China, began a two-day exchange at Ruijin Hospital.
Prof. Minhua Zheng from Ruijin Hospital delivered a welcoming speech, extending heartfelt greetings to the visiting physicians and introducing the hospital’s advancements in minimally invasive surgery.
Under the guidance of Prof. Luyang Zhang , the international delegation toured the hospital’s wards, facilities, and its century-old museum, which chronicles Ruijin’s 170-year journey and China’s evolving medical technology.
During the surgical observation session on February 24, Prof. Zheng’s team demonstrated laparoscopic techniques for colon and rectal cancer surgeries, emphasizing sphincter preservation. Prof. Zheng meticulously explained procedural approaches, lymph node dissection, and digestive tract reconstruction, sparking in-depth discussions on global treatment practices.
On February 25, Prof. Zheng’s team led a seminar on hot topics in colorectal surgery, including laparoscopic right hemicolectomy, different approaches and lymphadenectomy, total laparoscopic digestive tract reconstruction in laparoscopic colonic surgery from the perspective of mesenteric anatomny, and surgical decision-making for MSI-high rectal cancer. The interactive session was met with enthusiastic engagement.
Established in March 1964, Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center (SYSUCC) is one of China’s earliest oncology hospitals. As a leading hub for cancer treatment, research, and prevention, SYSUCC plays a pivotal role in national and regional oncology care, particularly in South China and the Greater Bay Area.
SYSUCC houses key platforms such as the State Key Laboratory of Oncology in South China, the National Clinical Trial Center for Anticancer Drugs, and the Guangdong Cancer Center. Its flagship journal, Cancer Communications, holds significant international influence.
Overview of the Second Stop Conference
On February 27, Prof. Ruihua Xu, Director of SYSUCC, inaugurated the event. Prof. Zhizhong Pan and Prof. Peirong Ding, leading colorectal surgeons, extended warm welcomes, emphasizing the goal of fostering innovation and global collaboration in colorectal cancer care.
The same day, SYSUCC experts including Prof. Pan, Prof. Ding, Prof. Liren Li, Prof. Xiaojun Wu, Prof. Junzhong Lin, Prof Gong Chen and Prof Zhenhai Lu, performed multiple colorectal surgeries. The live demonstrations of robotic and laparoscopic colorectal surgeries were complemented by detailed technical explanations and dynamic exchanges with international delegates.
On February 28, after observing clinical workflows, Prof. Ding outlined the department’s evolution. Prof. Feng Wang, Prof Gong Chen, Prof. Wu Jiang, and Prof. Binyi Xiao delivered keynote speeches on innovative therapies and minimally invasive techniques, showcasing SYSUCC’s groundbreaking research in colorectal oncology.
Topics included SYSUCC’s colorectal cancer studies, research progress on MRD in colorectal cancer, screening and management for Lynch syndrome, and SYSUCC clinical research on immunotherapy for dMMR/MSI-H colorectal cancer.
International participants praised the event for deepening their understanding of China’s surgical expertise and expressing eagerness for future collaborations.
