The ’NeoSilk Path’ Program on international Advanced Training Course in Thoracic Surgery

The 7-day ’NeoSilk Path’ Program on international Advanced Training Course in Thoracic Surgery, organized by Bluesail Surgical, was an outstanding success, taking place from September 23 to 29, 2024, in Guangzhou-Shanghai, three top academic centers in China.

Stop 1: The first Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University

The First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University, a large-scale Grade 3A hospital, is a comprehensive institution that encompasses medical treatment, teaching, scientific research, health care, rehabilitation and pre-hospital emergency care. With a rich history tracing back to its establishment as the" Sino-French Taomei Hospital " in 1903, the hospital has evolved through numerous name changes and developments before being renamed as the present First Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University in 2013.

Boasting a multitude of clinical and medical departments, the hospital houses a team of highly skilled and experienced medical professionals, including academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, healthcare specialists of the Central Government, and experts enjoying special subsidies from the State Council. Notably, the hospital excels in respiratory diseases, thoracic surgery, urinary surgery, and critical care medicine, and is recognized as one of the pioneer national clinical medical research centers in China.

Stop 1 - Conference Overview

The three-day master class held at the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University from September 23 to 25 centered on the revolutionary concept of "Tubeless" minimally invasive surgery, with the primary objective of facilitating rapid patient recovery. The program featured theoretical lectures, animal experiments, and "Tubeless" surgical observations, drawing the participation of experts from Germany, China, and the United States. This international gathering saw the collaboration of 15 overseas doctors from Germany, Turkey, and Romania, engaging in fruitful exchanges with their domestic counterparts to unravel the secrets of "Tubeless surgery." Beyond fostering international camaraderie, this event served as a pivotal platform for academic exchange and dissemination of knowledge.

Led by Prof. He Jianxing , President of Guangzhou Institute of Respiratory Health and Director of National Respiratory Medicine Center, 15 overseas doctors observed the clinical application of the " Tubeless" thoracoscopic technology of Prof. He Jianxing's team, and witnessed the remarkable rapid recovery of the patients.

Stop 2: Sun Yat-Sen University Cancer Center

Sun Yat-Sen University Cancer Center was established in March 1964 and is one of the earliest four cancer hospitals in New China. It is one of the largest oncology centers in China, integrating medical treatment, teaching, scientific research, and prevention. The Center plays a crucial role in national tumor prevention and treatment, particularly in South China, Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan. It has strong academic expertise and is among the leading cancer treatment facilities in the country.

The Center houses important scientific research and medical platforms such as the National Key Discipline ( Oncology ), National Key Laboratory of Oncology in South China , the Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Education , National Clinical Trial and Research Center for New Drugs (Anti-Tumor Drugs) , and the Oncology Provincial Collaboration and Innovation Center and other important scientific research and medical platforms. It is the supporting unit of the Guangdong Cancer Center and the Guangdong Institute of Esophageal Cancer. Cancer Communications, the English academic journal sponsored by the Center, has an important influence in the international arena.

Stop 2 - Conference Overview

On September 25, the ‘NeoSilk Path’ Program on international Advanced Training Course in Thoracic Surgery continued at the Sun Yat-Sen University Cancer Center. Prof. Peng Lin, Director of Chest Department, highlighted that the Center is pioneering thoracic oncology surgical departments in China. Over the years, it has evolved into the thoracic oncology surgical center in South China, with significant national influence. Through rich clinical practical experience, Sun Yat-Sen University Cancer Prevention and Control Center brought a feast of academic exchange to 15 overseas thoracic surgeons.

Prof. Lanjun Zhang, Prof. Hong Yang, Associate Consultant Dr. Zerui Zhao, and Associate Consultant Dr. Kongjia Luo from the Department of Thoracic Surgery of Sun Yat-Sen University Cancer Prevention and Treatment Center presented keynote speeches on innovative comprehensive treatment methods for lung and esophageal cancers, as well as the new minimally invasive surgery techniques respectively, and introduced to the European doctors the latest original and high-quality clinical research results of the center in the field of thoracic cancer, as well as latest techniques and concepts of diagnosis and treatment of thoracic tumors.

The presentations covers a range of topics, including neoadjuvant Immunochemotherapy for lung cancer, Induction SRBT with sequential immunochemotherapy forresectablee NSCLC, (NEOCRTEC5010) and beyond, as well as Electromagnetic Navigation Bronchoscopy in Thoracic Surgery, offering an insightful and engaging exploration of these subjects.

After listening to Prof. Hong Yang's lecture, Dr. Johannes Bodner from Germany expressed his excitement about Prof. Yang's team's work in the field of preoperative neoadjuvant therapy for esophageal cancer. He specifically mentioned their research on combining preoperative radiotherapy with immunotherapy to extend patients' lives and potentially change treatment guidelines. The lecture sparked a lively discussion among international thoracic surgeons and lecturers, creating a strong academic atmosphere at the event.

On September 26th, a multi-operative surgical demonstration for observation was held at Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Prevention and Treatment Center. The event was attended by numerous experts, including Prof. Jianhua Fu, Prof. Lanjun Zhang, Prof. Hong Yang, Prof. Junye Wang, Consultant Dr. Qianwen Liu, Consultant Dr. Yongbin Lin, Consultant Dr. Han Yang, Associate Consultant Dr. Kongjia Luo, and Associate Consultant Dr. Xiaodong Li, etc. The surgery covered common and latest surgical techniques in thoracic surgery, including robot-assisted esophagectomy or lobectomy for lung cancer, minimally Invasive esophagectomy or lobectomy for lung cancer, Robotic ENB-guided dye marking of pulmonary noudles and electromagnetically navigated bronchoscopy-guided three-dimensional conformal laser ablation for lung nodules , and so on.

During the event, German doctor Horst Mertins expressed his admiration for the robot-assisted esophageal cancer surgery performed by Prof. Jianhua Fu, describing it as a very smooth surgery.

On September 27th, 15 overseas doctors gathered at Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University in Shanghai to start the final part of their academic exchange journey.

The Vice President of Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University Prof. Lixin Wang and the director of thoracic surgery Prof. Lijie Tan, personally welcomed the overseas doctors and delivered a speech at the exchange kick-off event.

During the academic exchange at Zhongshan Hospital of Fudan University, the active participation of two overseas experts greatly enriched the event with an international perspective. 

Dr. Eric Dominic Roessner, a renowned thoracic surgeon from Germany, presented a fascinating lecture with his exceptional achievements and rich experience in the field of thoracic surgery in the world. He shared his latest research results and surgical techniques in the field of thoracic surgery in depth, which benefited the participants greatly.

Similarly, Dr. Volkan Erdogu, a thoracic surgeon from Turkey, introduced his hospital and the work of the thoracic surgery team to the experts present in his enthusiastic and humorous way. His vivid explanation and unique insight into thoracic surgical diseases not only conveyed the passion of Turkey, but also built a bridge for the exchange and cooperation between China and Turkey in the field of thoracic surgery.
