A featured academic program created by bluesail Surgical, the China Obesity Conference Frontiers of Weight Loss and Metabolic Surgery Forum

On July 29, 2023, the sixth issue of the Focus series of academic activities, a featured academic program created by bluesail Surgical, the China Obesity Conference Frontiers of Weight Loss and Metabolic Surgery Forum, was successfully held at the China National Convention Center in Beijing. This issue continues to dig deeper into the field of weight loss, and the topics are centered on the frontiers of weight loss and metabolic surgery.

01Expert Introduction

This session was divided into two parts: International Frontier and Domestic Progress. International Frontier was moderated by Prof. Zhu Yanhong, the chief committee member-designate of Obesity and Type 2 Diabetes Specialized Committee of Surgery Branch of Chinese Physicians' Association, and Prof. Zhang Peng of Beijing Friendship Hospital affiliated with Capital Medical University, Prof. Khaled Gawdat (Ain-Shams School of Medicine), Prof. Li Weijie of Min Sheng General Prof. Khaled Gawdat (Ain-Shams School of Medicine), Prof. Li Weijie from Minsheng General Hospital/Suzhou Mingji Hospital and other distinguished experts in the field of bariatric surgery brought exciting topics to this session. Domestic advances were moderated by Prof. Zhang Bin from the Sixth People's Hospital of Shanghai Jiaotong University and Prof. Liu Jinguang from the Fourth Affiliated Hospital of China Medical University. Distinguished experts in the field of bariatric surgery, including Prof. Dong Zhiyong from the First Affiliated Hospital of Jinan University and Prof. Wang Yong from the Fourth Affiliated Hospital of China Medical University, presented the topics for this session.

02 Welcoming Remarks

The meeting opened with a speech by Prof. Zhang Zhongtao. His opening speech fully expressed his welcome and attention to the participating experts, and emphasized that the field of weight loss needs to be discussed from multiple national perspectives in order to promote the exchange of new ideas and further improve the quality and safety of medical treatment in weight loss and metabolic surgery for the benefit of more patients. At the same time, Prof. Zhang Zhongtao expressed his high recognition and full affirmation of the Focus academic series built by bluesail Surgical. After Prof. Zhang Zhongtao's speech, the meeting started with an exciting sharing session. Firstly, Prof. Khaled Gawdat from Egypt gave a presentation on the management process of failed bariatric surgery. After that, Prof. Vijay Lee from Minsheng General Hospital shared a speech entitled "Robot-assisted dual-channel bariatric metabolic surgery" on the stage. He firstly emphasized that Sleeve Gastrectomy is a hot topic in the clinic and that the combination with Transit-Bipartition is a very suitable choice. He then introduced the origin and development of Transit-Bipartition Surgery and elaborated its application in weight loss metabolic surgery. Prof. W.J. Lee particularly emphasized the advantages of robot-assisted technology in this type of surgery. He pointed out that robot-assisted surgery can improve the safety of surgery and reduce the physical burden on the surgeon, thus making the surgery more precise and controllable. For the Tansit-Bipartition, he believes it is likely to become the next internationally recognized surgical method for weight loss and metabolism, providing more effective treatment options for obese patients.

Sharing by Prof. Dong Zhiyong of the First Affiliated Hospital of Jinan University

Prof. Dong Zhiyong from the First Affiliated Hospital of Jinan University shared a presentation entitled "Advances in the treatment of childhood and adolescent obesity". He firstly introduced the research overview in the field of obesity treatment for children and adolescents, pointing out that the comprehensive treatment approach is considered to be the most effective way. However, for the small percentage of adolescents who are severely obese and cannot be effectively controlled by other methods, surgical treatment may be considered. However, Prof. Dong emphasized that there must be a clear understanding of the risks, ethics, medical compliance and complications of surgery, and that the choice of surgery needs to be more rigorously evaluated and carefully considered. In addition, Prof. Dong Zhiyong also mentioned studies related to gene therapy. These studies have attempted to intervene in weight management in adolescents through the regulation of genes. However, these studies are still in the laboratory stage and need more research and validation before they can be applied in the clinic.

Finally, the meeting came to an end. Prof. Wang Yong gave a lecture entitled "Sleeve Gastric + JJB Safe or Unsafe". He introduced the combined use of sleeve gastric surgery and gastroduodenal anastomosis (JJB) and discussed the safety of this surgical approach in the treatment of obesity. He shared his team's experience and findings in clinical practice, including data and cases on the success rate, complication rate, and postoperative outcome of the surgery. At the same time, Prof. Wang Yong also mentioned some potential safety hazards and challenges, encouraging participants to conduct in-depth research and discussion on this approach. Subsequently, other experts and audience members actively interacted and asked questions about Prof. Wang Yong's presentation, discussing more about sleeve gastric + JJB surgery, including the indications for the surgery, quality of life after the surgery, and long-term follow-up results.
